The Safety-First Approach: Why Implay’s Materials Make The Difference

Dive into the science behind Implay’s safe, secure, high-quality materials. Learn more about the fabrics and finishes we use in our designs, and see why they’re the best choice for your play area.

At Implay, we’re proud to take a safety-first approach to play and sports. While we understand the importance of risk-taking in childhood development and skills progression, we also recognise that those risks must be taken in a safe and secure environment. That’s why we prioritise adventurous play in the safest way possible. And we do this by very carefully selecting the materials we use for manufacturing all Implay shapes and products.

Our approach is rooted in the latest scientific research, making sure we’re only using materials that support human health and well-being while reducing the risk of accidents and injuries. So, venture behind the scenes with us to take a closer look at the high-quality materials used here at Implay...

  1. CFC-free flame retardant materials

Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) are often used to improve insulation in plastics, and to add some degree of fire resistance as they’re non-flammable. But while they’re generally considered to be non-toxic, research has found that they can increase the likelihood of irritation, especially to the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Keeping children safe and healthy while they play is our ultimate goal, so we’re not willing to take the risk. That’s why we use CFC-free foam that still offers excellent fire resistance. This ensures that, should the worst happen, our products don’t facilitate the spread of flames.

  1. PVC 610

Most products in the Implay range are made from medium-duty 610gsm PVC (also known as PVC 610). This is the same material that’s used to make strong tarpaulin covers for lorries and boats. So why do we use it? Because of its incredible strength and tear-resistant qualities. You’ll have complete peace of mind that, while kids are playing, they’re not able to accidentally rip through the material and expose the inner foam. While you may find some play providers using heavy-duty PVC 900, it’s overkill in a play environment. 610gsm is perfectly suited to high-energy play settings.

  1. Wipe-clean PVC

Researchers in the US studied ball pits and identified 31 species of bacteria. These bacteria were capable of causing a range of health conditions, from urinary tract infections and skin rashes to pneumonia and meningitis. Now, while the validity of the study has been questioned by experts here in the UK, one thing is clear: any sort of equipment used in shared play and sporting facilities must be easily cleaned. We use wipe-clean PVC that can be sanitised quickly, reducing the risk of germs, bacteria, and other nasties being spread among groups of children and athletes.

  1. High-density foam

Foam comes in a huge variety of different densities, which affects how the foam performs and feels. High-density foam tends to be able to handle greater pressure without losing its shape. Low-density foam is softer, more flexible, and easier to manipulate. Here at Implay, we only use top-quality, high-density foam because of the excellent inherent shock absorption properties. If a piece of equipment is hit at high speed – which can happen easily in play and sports facilities – it needs to be able to withstand the impact to ensure high levels of user safety and reduce injury risk.

  1. Water-resistant coating

Like many materials, foam is vulnerable to mould growth if it's regularly exposed to wet or damp environments. If moisture seeps into the foam and doesn’t get sufficient airflow to allow it to evaporate, that can create the ideal conditions for mould. When it comes to soft play shapes, spillages, rain, and ‘little accidents’ can introduce moisture, accelerating mould growth and increasing the risk of related health issues such as allergies and respiratory infections. That’s why we use water-resistant coatings.

Don’t compromise on safety

Let’s be honest. It's completely natural to be tempted by shortcuts. But when it comes to safety, you can’t afford to take the easy option. Opting for lower-quality materials may well be cheaper, but it’s just not worth the potential risks. Give yourself peace of mind that you’re doing everything in your power to protect your users by selecting the best, safest materials on the market. You’ll find these right here at Implay, so be sure to check out our range, and get in touch if you have any questions.
